Hi Matt,
Glad you liked. It's all about seeing things from all different points of view - you'll find a lot of that on the blog. That said, just as it is wrong not to teach a child to use cutlery instead of their hands (an analogy I use for the Dawkinses of this world that confuse religious/moral instruction with brainwashing), I always gravitate towards seeing things within a Jewish paradigm. The reason I'm comfortable doing so is because time and again I've been immensely impressed with its relevance and vibrance.

I need to review the original post as it's been a while. I'll say this for now - no, I'm not expecting the writers of X-Files to be intimate with Jewish world-view in order to write, but what I am saying is that the world should hear and become intimate with the Jewish world view to replace the distorted and/or insufficient moral messages that tarnish the name of all religions. I find certain elements of Christian philosophy wanting. This is usually because it has departed from its Jewish roots to fit the Messianic hyper-focus of its followers.

More another time perhaps. Sorry to tease :-)

Wow... I like what you've written for the most part, plain spoken, yet logic applied to places i haven't thought of..

Clever! Genius!

But i'm gonna take a while to digest this.
You seem concerned about Pagan values in a society with Judeo-Christian morals.

Where does Greek logic play into this, compared with Jewish logic? Is there a difference, and which really came first? Or is it a matter of how wide a scope one takes into consideration before making a conclusion?

I am assuming you are saying that other religious are fanatic and illogical, but that secularism, esp. secular jewishness, is just wrong. but is secularism illogical? If so, how?

And finally, my favorite question to ask you- X files.. did the writer of your favorite lines have to have an intimate knowledge of Judaism in order to produce a character that could have such un-jewish insights? AKA knowledge of Judaism, in order to deconstruct it or challenge it?

Update: Just thinking - The conversion panel of 3 would not make any difference to a minor (since he is not of an age to render a choice about being Jewish or not) and so probably wouldn't be applied. That is, to convert a minor all you need is circumcision and mikvah. Is a panel of three required to confront the child-now-man when he reaches 13? Or is his way of life sufficient testimony to be considered his choice? In either case, again, COULD the boy exhibit Jewish lifestyle - was he capable? Do we apply safek doraita lechumra or derabbanan lekula to a convert over which we can't decide? We don't want to burden him with an extra 606 mitzvot. One thing's for sure no matter what debates we have on Earth: G-d will welcome him, love, and take care of him no matter where he's buried.

Yes you could be right about the going to church, although the only Christians I know who go more than once a week are Catholics who attend morning mass a couple of times a week (now I wonder where they got that idea from ;) ) I'm pretty sure your average protestant just goes once a week, maybe a Bible study class during the week or something. Certainly nothing like on the scale of physical, concrete observances that a traditional Jew would carry out each and every day.

Yes I totally see what you mean about the quantity/quality of actions. It would be interesting to see how Jews responded if the question about becoming more/less religious was made more concrete, adding detail about what they might mean by an increase or decrease. I'm fairly sure that different people will respond in vastly different ways depending on their own interpretation. But again, that's just the scientist in me wanting things nailed down as concretely as possible!
